  11. Apple Turns Over Development of Macintosh Common Lisp to Digitool, Inc.

  15. Cupertino, California--November 10, 1994--As part of its program to
  16. accelerate the availability of developer tools for the Power Macintosh ,
  17. and demonstrating its commitment to Macintosh Common Lisp (MCL) users,
  18. Apple Computer, Inc. today announced that it has licensed its MCL
  19. development software to Digitool, Inc. The purpose of the agreement is for
  20. Digitool to take over future development of MCL. Digitool has agreed to
  21. provide ongoing marketing and technical support for MCL, and to introduce
  22. next year a Power Macintosh version of the software, which will generate
  23. native PowerPC code.

  25. Digitool also has agreed to continue further development of the version of
  26. MCL for Macintosh systems based on the Motorola 680x0 processors. Apple
  27. will continue to offer MCL through APDA, the company's source for developer
  28. tools.

  30. "This agreement underscores Apple's ongoing commitment to the developer
  31. community to provide strong support for our developer tools and to allow
  32. developers to move their code forward to new hardware platforms and OS
  33. releases," commented Peter Christy, Apple's senior director of Developer
  34. Products Engineering. "With this agreement, Apple and Digitool will be
  35. working together to ensure a bright future for MCL on both the 680x0-based
  36. Macintosh and Power Macintosh."

  38. Apple now expects that developers who have programs based on MCL code will
  39. be able to continue development efforts with the knowledge that their code
  40. can be ported to the Power Macintosh. In addition, developers will benefit
  41. by full support--and future enhancements--of the 680x0 version of MCL by
  42. Digitool.

  45. Sayed, president and founder of Digitool. "MCL is in a league of its own as
  46. an implementation of the Common Lisp standard and object system. It has
  47. sold many Lisp users on the Macintosh and sold many Macintosh developers on
  48. Lisp. Now, as well as with our future release of a Power Macintosh native
  49. MCL, many of the large workstation-based Lisp systems developed in academe,
  50. aerospace, telecommunications, military, finance and medicine will find an
  51. unbeatable price/performance delivery platform."

  53. Digitool, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is a new software company
  54. formed by the principals of Paradigm Software, Incorporated, and staffed by
  55. former employees of Apple's MCL development team. Digitool's MCL
  56. development effort is partially funded by eleven corporate sponsors and MCL
  57. customers including Apple Computer, Inc., Flavors Technology, Inc., KyTek,
  58. Inc., Lissys Ltd., and the University of Basel.

  60. Product Summary
  61. Common Lisp is an advanced programming language widely used in industry and
  62. research. MCL is recognized as a premier implementation of Common Lisp on
  63. personal computers with performance comparable to Lisp workstations. An
  64. object-oriented dynamic language, MCL implements the ANSI Common Lisp
  65. Object System (CLOS) and includes an incremental compiler and application
  66. generator. MCL is ideally suited for quick application prototyping and
  67. provides a delivery environment for intelligent applications as well as
  68. high-level Macintosh interface access.

  70. Availability and Pricing
  71. MCL Version 2.0.1 is available for U.S. $495 through APDA, Apple's source
  72. for development tools and related programming products. Pricing for future
  73. versions will be announced upon product availability. Digitool also has
  74. announced that it will provide current users with the ability to upgrade to
  75. future versions at a reduced price. Site licenses for MCL are also
  76. available from APDA.
